If someone asks me what my favourite superhero comic of all time is, chances are this will be the answer.
Superman is known for being notoriously hard to write. The difficulty is wringing drama from the concept of someone who is generally an amazingly nice guy, who’s invulnerable to almost everything, it’s a bit of an uphill struggle. Morrison and Quitely make it look effortless. All the key elements for a good Man of Steel story are here.
Morrison remembers that Superman is about hope and crazy science fiction. Morrison’s All-Star has a quiet grace and intelligence. He combines the best of the past and present in a self-contained story that explores the essence of what makes him work as a character. This book is a love letter to Superman, Lois, Jimmy, Lex Luthor, and all the usual suspects.
I can sometimes get lost in Morrison’s writing, too many big ideas and too fast, but this is one of his most accessible stories. Superman is a calm focal point to the insane world that surrounds him. This Big Blue you can believe will always find a way to make things right without having to compromise what he stands for. This is essentially superhero storytelling at its best - inspirational.
This book is published by DC Comics - Available at Kraken Comics £26 here
