Fables by Bill Willingham and Lan Medina/ Mark Buckingham

Fables is a comic series to fall in love with. Its characters are well-developed, recognisable, and charming. You just can’t help but thoroughly enjoy the time you spend with them. Once you’ve invested some time with this particular group of fairy tale exiles, it’s hard to let them go. Though the series concluded in 2015, its magic endures.

The first volume sets the stage by introducing us to a host of fairy tale characters who have been exiled from their homelands by a mysterious and powerful enemy. Now residing in New York City, these characters have formed a hidden community where past crimes are forgiven, though not forgotten. Keeping the peace is the gruff and ever-watchful sheriff, Bigby Wolf. Legends in Exile opens with a compelling murder mystery, serving as a perfect introduction to the world of Fables.

While Lan Medina delivers solid artwork in this first volume, it’s when series regular Mark Buckingham takes over in Volume 2 that the visual style truly finds its groove. From there, Fables evolves into something truly special. This series will break your heart in the best way possible. It’s a tale about friendship, conflict, sacrifice, and other big, important themes.

Ages 17+, Published by DC, Fables Compendium One is in stock both in-store and on our website here, so you can dive right into the full epic from the very beginning.
